Apple is waiting for 2025 to taste the taste of 2nm chips from TSMC

In an ongoing race towards the best technologies, Apple is temporarily content with the role of a spectator in terms of 2-nanometer chips, as new reports confirm the dominance of the 3-nanometer standard in its upcoming devices in 2024.

Apple is the largest customer of TSMC, the Taiwanese chipmaking giant, and is always first in line to obtain the latest technology, which will continue into the next year with early discussions about cutting-edge 2nm technology.

Currently, it carries chips A17 Pro New in phones iPhone 15 Titled the best in the world, taking advantage of 3nm technology Apple will take over all production in 2023 a luxury that only a few companies succeed in due to the poor returns when starting the manufacture of any new standard.

According to a reportDigiTimesApple and TSMC are planning for the future, targeting the start of production of 2nm chips next year, with Apple once again assuming the role of an early customer.

But achieving this goal from TSMC remains in doubt, which may affect the launch plans of new iPhones, Macs, and iPads.

Apple accustoms its users to new M chips and class A processors every year with a new manufacturing standard, and it appears that the upcoming M4 and A18 Pro chipset will rely on the second generation of the 3nm standard in 2024 devices.

TSMC will also roll out several new variants of the 3nm standard during the year, including N3E, N3P, and a very powerful HPC customization called N3X.

Everyone's eyes remain on TSMC's ability to meet its production targets. The 2nm chips represent a huge shift for the company, abandoning FinFET technology for the first time in favor of Gate-All-Around (GAA) paper transistor technology.

TSMC began its research on this standard in 2020 and plans to launch it alongside 3nm next year, although rumors have emerged of a possible delay until 2026. Regardless of the deadline, Apple will have to rely again on the 3nm standard for its devices in 2024.

On the other hand, Intel is preparing to outperform TSMC in its own way with the 2nm 20A processor expected late this year.

If this happens, it would theoretically open the door for Apple to consider changing its chip factory to obtain the best technology available. Despite the difficulty of this step, Intel seems determined to regain the title of leader in the chip industry, confirming its commitment to its ambitious plan.
