Biden administration suspends the construction of new natural gas export facilities to deal with the climate crisis


The administration of US President Joe Biden announced on Friday the suspension of issuing permits for any new facilities to export liquefied natural gas, justifying the move by the urgent need to deal with the climate crisis by accelerating the abandonment of fossil fuels.

Biden said in a statement, “Pausing new permits related to liquefied natural gas reflects a vision of the reality of the climate crisis: the existential threat of our time.”


He added, "While MAGA Republicans deliberately deny the urgency of the climate crisis, dooming the American people to a dangerous future, my administration will not relent" on this issue. The term "MAGA" is used to refer to

The United States is the largest exporter of liquefied natural gas at a rate of 328 million cubic meters per day, according to the international gas news organization CEDIGAZ, with seven stations currently operating.

Under the new plan, new export applications will be subject to study for an unlimited period that takes into account climate and broader environmental and economic implications.


Scientists and environmental activists welcomed Friday's move. 
"This is a very important step, and it is appropriate for the administration to conduct a broad study to understand the implications of exporting natural gas, especially with regard to expanding capabilities at this stage," Dan Lashoff, director of the non-profit World Resources Institute, told AFP.
