China is pressuring Iran to curb Houthi attacks in the Red Sea

ships in the Red Sea or risk damaging trade relations with Beijing, according to statements by four Iranian sources and a diplomat familiar with the matter to Reuters. 

 Iranian sources said that discussions on attacks and trade between China and Iran took place in several recent meetings in Beijing and Iran.

 One Iranian source stated that China said that if its interests were harmed in any way, this would affect trade with Tehran.

 It is worth noting that the Houthi attacks raised the cost of shipping and insurance by harming a major trade route between Asia and Europe that is widely used by ships coming from China. 

However, the four Iranian sources added that Chinese officials did not issue any specific statements or threats regarding how trade relations with Iran would be harmed if its interests were affected by the Houthi attacks.

 While Iranian oil makes up only 10% of China's crude oil imports, Beijing has a host of other suppliers that can fill the gap. 

Commenting on the matter, the Chinese Foreign Minister stated that China is a loyal friend of the countries of the Middle East and is committed to enhancing regional security and stability and seeking common development and prosperity.
