Biden is frustrated with Netanyahu’s plans in Gaza. His goal is to remain in power

Knock Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has another new nail in his relationship with US President Joe Biden.

Netanyahu added a new problem to the previous disputes witnessed in relations between the two countries during the past few days by talking about a military plan to storm the Rafah Governorate in the southern Gaza Strip, which includes more than 1,300,000 displaced Palestinians.

Meanwhile, a number of Biden's aides expressed their concern about the erosion and decline of his popularity among young voters due to his continued support for Israel since the outbreak of the war on October 7, according to what the Wall Street Journal reported on Sunday.

Some of the US President's aides fear that his support for Netanyahu will harm his standing among young voters as he seeks another term in the White House during the presidential race expected next November.

Closer to estrangement

Also, six American officials confirmed that Biden is closer to breaking with Netanyahu, according to the Washington Post. They also revealed that his aides urged him to publicly criticize the Israeli Prime Minister.

They pointed out that these aides no longer view Netanyahu as a partner who can truly influence him, even in secret.

For his part, Netanyahu apparently tried to alleviate the resentment of the US administration, which has and continues to oppose the storming of the city crowded with displaced Palestinians, by stressing that his government is determined to protect civilians.

However, this problem is in addition to other problems that the 81-year-old Biden faces. A number of his Democratic supporters have previously expressed their fears that he will not be able to complete another four years in the White House due to his advanced age.

His recent slips of the tongue and his confusion of the names of some presidents also exacerbated these fears, as the topic of “age” has become a regular occurrence on the American street.

US-Israeli relations had previously witnessed many disagreements over the war in Gaza, whether in terms of the high death toll among Palestinian civilians as a result of Israeli raids or the future of the Strip and the nature of its governance.

It is noteworthy that the Israeli attack on Rafah also exacerbated tensions with Egypt, which is adjacent to the Gaza Strip border. Egyptian officials were concerned about the possibility of the Israeli side pushing the Palestinians who were displaced to that region towards the Sinai Peninsula.

They have repeatedly urged their Israeli counterparts over the past period to limit the scope of any potential operation in Rafah, warning that Cairo has the option of suspending the peace treaty it concluded with Israel in 1979.
